In brief
The Riverside County Superior Court charges $450 to file a petition for divorce and $450 for the other spouse’s response as of January 1, 2026, plus $2 per case when papers go through eSubmit. The other costs are not set by the court: document services, lawyers and mediators publish their own figures, which run from $199 for forms to hourly rates of $300 to $500.
- The court’s fees can be waived with form FW-001; a waiver does not cover lawyer fees or private mediation3.
- Online document services list prices from $199 to $1,999 or more; two of them state that they handle uncontested cases only4567.
- The Riverside County Bar Association’s lawyer referral service charges $40 for a consultation of up to 30 minutes; the lawyer sets fees after that8.
- The Bar’s Dispute Resolution Service lists mediation at $300 an hour with a five-hour minimum12.
- Inland Counties Legal Services and Riverside Legal Aid offer free family law help to people who qualify2324.
This page explains the court’s process. It is not legal advice, and this site is not a law firm.
The detail
A divorce in Riverside County has one cost the court sets and several the court does not. This page puts the published figures side by side, each with its date and source: the court’s fees, the cost of forms, what lawyers and mediators list, and what free help exists. It does not estimate what any one divorce will cost, because no official source publishes an average. The details behind each part are in Riverside County divorce filing fees, court fee waivers and the four articles listed in the sections below.

What the court charges
The Riverside County Superior Court’s fee schedule, effective January 1, 2026, lists $450 for the petition and $450 for the response in a divorce, legal separation or nullity case1. A Request for Order, the form that asks the judge for orders during the case, is $60, or $85 when it asks to change or enforce custody or visitation1. Filing through eSubmit, the court’s online portal, adds a $2 transaction fee per case, and domestic violence restraining order filings carry no fee2. Copies are $0.50 a page, and a certified copy of the dissolution record is $151. The line-by-line schedule, and why Riverside’s figure is $15 above the statewide $435, are on the filing fees page.
Two other costs sit outside the fee schedule. The first is serving the other spouse, since the court does not serve divorce papers; a granted fee waiver covers the sheriff’s fee to serve, but no Riverside source publishes a figure for a private process server, so this page gives none3. The second is anything the court orders later. The Riverside schedule lists a child custody evaluation as “determined by private evaluator” and court-appointed counsel for a child as set by hours and the parties’ ability to pay1.
Online document services
The site earns a commission on some links to document services and books, which does not affect what is described. The services below are listed in plain text with the price each one’s own page showed on October 9, 2026, and 3StepDivorce and OnlineDivorce.com each state that they are not law firms45.
| Service | Price on its own page | What the page says it does |
|---|---|---|
| 3StepDivorce | $299, or payment plans of 2 x $157, 3 x $109 or 4 x $84 | Prepares California forms from a questionnaire; you print, sign and file them yourself; uncontested cases only4 |
| OnlineDivorce.com | $199 base; $399 Platinum Filing Service | Base fee covers completed forms; Platinum collects the spouse’s signatures and files in some jurisdictions and excludes court fees; access lasts 30 days, then renews at $39.99 a month unless cancelled5 |
| CompleteCase (Divorce.com) | Paperwork Only $499+, We File For You $999+, Fully Guided $1,999+ | Forms from a questionnaire; the second and third tiers file for you; the third adds four mediation sessions6 |
| LegalZoom | Uncontested divorce package “starts at $1,999” (article updated October 17, 2024) | The article does not say what the package prepares or whether it files7 |
The Divorce.com pricing page prints each tier as a figure followed by “state filing fees” without explaining whether the court fee is included6. Online divorce services for a California case covers what each one prepares, the rules for non-lawyer preparers, and when a service is the wrong tool.
Sources disagree Hello Divorce’s home page lists its uncontested divorce service at $400 to $2,000 with filing fees excluded17, while its California page estimates its online guided route at $1,500 to $5,000 plus the court fee16. Neither page lists the price of each plan. Treat both as ranges, and check the plan price on the service’s own site.
Lawyers
California Courts’ self-help guide lists the ways lawyers charge: a fixed fee, an hourly fee, a retainer (money paid up front that fees are subtracted from), a contingency fee and a statutory fee. It adds that filing fees, copying and expert costs are usually separate and that a client can ask for a written estimate14.
The Riverside County Bar Association’s lawyer referral service lists a $40 fee for the initial consultation in most matters, a session of up to 30 minutes, and says attorneys set their own fees afterward8. The figures below are general estimates on three firms’ own sites, not rate cards:
| Source (the firm’s own site) | Figure | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Edgar & Dow, Murrieta | $300 to $400 an hour; average retainer $3,000 to $5,000 | Stated as general figures, not the firm’s own rates9 |
| Bratton & Razo, Riverside | $300 to $500 an hour; total costs from $1,500 for a simple uncontested case to $15,000 to $30,000 or more for a complex one | General estimates, no firm rate given10 |
| Camarata & Fuller, Temecula | $1,500 to $3,000 for an uncontested divorce, said to include court filing fees | General statement18 |
LegalZoom’s national cost article, updated December 18, 2025, lists $270 as the average attorney rate per hour, $3,000 to $10,000 or more for a moderately contested divorce and $15,000 to $20,000 or more for a trial, with an average of $11,300 and a median of $7,000 for divorces with an attorney11. It is a vendor’s national estimate, not a Riverside figure. No State Bar survey of family law rates is cited here because none was found.
Limited-scope representation lets a person hire a lawyer for part of a case, such as preparing forms, coaching for hearings or handling one issue, while handling the rest; the California Courts guide says it can cost less than full representation, and that if a client tells the lawyer not to take certain steps, the client is responsible for the outcome in those parts15. Finding a family law attorney through official channels explains the referral service, the State Bar’s Attorney Search and the form that notifies the court of limited-scope help.
Mediation and collaborative divorce
The Riverside County Bar Association’s Dispute Resolution Service, whose panel the Bar describes as more than 65 lawyers, lists family law among its case types and a rate of $300 an hour for matters of up to four parties, with a five-hour minimum12. At the stated rate, the minimum is $1,500 (the page does not say how the fee is divided between spouses). That is arithmetic from the stated rate, not a published total. A fee waiver does not cover private mediation3.
Collaborative law is a separate process in which each spouse hires a specially trained lawyer and the lawyers withdraw if the case goes to court. The court’s collaborative law information sheet says these lawyers generally charge by the hour, that rates vary, that no one can predict the total and that other professionals, such as an accountant or child specialist, may add cost; the sheet also states that the process “will almost always cost less” than traditional court representation, which is the sheet’s own claim and not a figure13. See mediation and collaborative divorce in Riverside County.
Free and low-cost routes
Riverside Legal Aid, legally the Public Service Law Corporation, lists dissolutions, support, custody, paternity and restraining orders among its services, and says its help is free for those who qualify23. Inland Counties Legal Services runs a Family Law Access Project that offers free legal assistance and document preparation for the Indio and Riverside courts24. The court’s Self Help Legal Services gives self-represented people remote assistance, links to forms and explanations of procedure, by phone at 951-274-4499 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.22. Addresses, hours and eligibility are on free and low-cost family law help in Riverside County and the Self-Help Center page.
For reading, the Riverside County Law Library holds a 2015 reference copy of How to Do Your Own Divorce in California by Ed Sherman21. The publisher’s page lists the 2026 edition at $29.9520.

When to get help
Self Help Legal Services is the free first stop for the forms and the process, and Riverside Legal Aid and Inland Counties Legal Services take family law cases for people who qualify222324. A reason to move to paid help that follows from this page: the cost figures here assume an uncontested case, and 3StepDivorce and OnlineDivorce.com state that they handle only cases where the spouses agree45. If spouses disagree about children or property, or there is a restraining order in the picture, the Bar’s referral service ($40 for a consultation of up to 30 minutes) is the official route to a lawyer, and limited-scope help is one way to pay for part of a case815. For immediate danger, call 911.
